debian etch 20061230 with ipw3945
at last i got change to have a journey back with debian. after very long delay (until now i think) for new release of stable debian, i became unpatient, and i need new debian on my presario v5000 notebook. so on last dec 30 2006, i download daily etch netinst cd, and began the installation process. took about 4 hours to install base operating system, my downlink only 256kbs, so throughput around 160kbps, really slow for net install. after installation, i looked at the pci list:
ah, looked promising to me. i checked the ethernet, eth0 automatically up, no problem at all. my wireless which is usually eth1 on ubuntu not up yet, never mind, figure it out later. other devices looked ok too, SATA, etc. one should be set immediately is the vga, so i installed 915resolution package, and immediately it recognized my vga card and altered the bios setting to enable 1280×800 resolution on the lcd.
now back on my wireless, i was prepared to compile kernel if necessary. so check the kernel, it was 2.6.18-3-386, and it was not SMP capable, so i installed linux-image-2.6.18-3-686, SMP supported, and my dual core recognized. the i installed kernel sources for 2.6.18-3-686. after some googling, i noticed that ipw3945 was not included in the kernel, and there is available on another package: ipw3945-modules-2.6-686-bigmem, ok, that’s the module, and it requires also Intel’s firmware and regulatory daemon, both of this can be get here, although, i get the regulatory daemon (funny deamon naming to me) from debian, there is ipw3945d package, and i install this instead one from intel. but the firmware i got Intel one. after reading README file, restart, my wifi brought up immediately. strange enough that i had to put it on eth2, unable to set it on eth1. i’ll figure it out later, at least now i can work ‘on’ my pond, watching my kois …..
